Patrizzi & Co. will be offering a rare Breguet manuscript later this month in Geneva. Dictated by Breguet to his assistant, the manuscript "his horological innovations, the history of his firm, watch calibers and complications, and his overall philosophy and designs".
A prized manuscript written by Abraham-Louis Breguet a few years before his death chronicling his horological innovations, the history of his firm, watch calibers and complications, and his overall philosophy and designs will be auctioned by Patrizzi & Co in Geneva on Sunday, April 25. Written between 1818 and 1823, the manuscript recently resurfaced and can be viewed publicly for the first time in nearly 200 years.
"It is hard to stress the importance of this event to the world and more specifically to the horological world," said Osvaldo Patrizzi, chairman and CEO of Patrizzi & Co. "These are the writings of the master of horology, the knowledge his lifetime – from which we can learn many details that we have until today only been able to speculate on. It will change watchmaking history."
The 354-page manuscript is divided into seven lots. Breguet dictated the text to his assistant Louis Moinet and edited and noted corrections by hand. He died in 1823 before it could be completed.
The document will be shown to the public during the auction preview, April 9-11 in Milan, April 15-18 in Monaco and April 22-24 in Geneva. The auction will be held Saturday and Sunday, April 24 & 25 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Geneva. The Breguet lots, which will culminate the auction on Sunday, are estimated to sell for CHF 40,000 – 80,000 each (approx. $37,600 - $75,194).
