Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Limited Edition 2010

Schaffhausen, 22 October 2010 – With a large black dial contrasting with orange hands and indices, the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Limited Edition 2010 from IWC Schaffhausen is a genuine eye-catcher. Just 250 watches in stainless steel will be produced exclusively for selected IWC boutiques.

Distinctly masculine and packed with state-of the-art technology, it is a watch that’s hard to miss. Apart from one of the largest automatic movements in the world and a seven-day power reserve, it also boasts a mechanical perpetual calendar with a four-digit year display and a moon phase display showing the moon in both hemispheres. Together with the unique nature of its functions, the feature that distinguishes this Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Limited Edition 2010 from other timepieces is the ease with which it can be operated.

A full complement of calendar displays
The Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Limited Edition 2010 is not only extremely unusual to look at; it is also limited to 250 pieces and available only in selected IWC boutiques. The striking orange of the luminescent hands and indices against the dark background colourfully underscores the essential qualities of this

Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Limited Edition 2010. Nevertheless, the characteristic cockpit-style design is accompanied in this case by the delicate displays of the perpetual calendar that puts this timepiece in a class of its own. It not only shows the time in hours, minutes and seconds, but also displays the moon as seen in both hemispheres. It is a fairly rare kind of display for a wristwatch that is otherwise fully attuned to a modern, thoroughly globalised world. A small aircraft silhouette denotes the state of the moon in the northern (N) as well as the southern (S) hemisphere, which presents a mirror image of itself depending on where the viewer is observing it. The moon phase display of the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Limited Edition 2010 deviates from the actual state of the moon by just 12 seconds in each lunar period. In other words, the discrepancy amounts to just one day in 577 years.

All the calendar displays such as the date, day, month, year, decade and century, as well as the moon phase display – which is advanced by the weekday star wheel – are based on an ingenious form of synchronisation. All the displays are advanced automatically and take every leap day in the Gregorian calendar into account until 2100, without any need for further adjustment. As a result, the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Limited Edition 2010 is unmatched in its ease of use. It is not possible inadvertently to set or confuse the displays because they can only be advanced synchronously, as one, using the crown, if the watch has not been worn for a lengthy period of time.

Impressive on the inside
The transparent sapphire-glass back sets off the qualities of the IWC-manufactured 51614 calibre to perfection. When the watch is worn normally, the efficient Pellaton winding system fully winds the spring of the long-running movement in just under two days.

The power reserve display, which is located at “3 o’clock” on the dial and combined with the date display, moves slowly anticlockwise from 1 to 7 (days) to indicate that it is fully wound. Depending on the direction in which the system is rotating, the two pawls alternately drive the click wheel. The fascinating interplay between them can be ob- served clearly through the transparent sapphire- glass back. The rotor is engraved with the letter- ing PILOT’S CLASSIC LTD. EDITION 2010 and the words ONE OUT OF 250 on the casing ring refer to the quantity of the limited edition. The Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Limited Edition 2010 is equipped with a shock-absorption system and is water-resistant 6 bar. The external dimensions of the stainless-steel case – a diameter of 46.2 millimetres and a height of 15.8 millimetres – are likewise highly impressive. The black alligator leather strap with its folding clasp comes with the characteristic rivets and  contrasting quilted stitching in orange.
